Course Description

As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes the mental health landscape, this workshop takes an in-depth look at the recent updates to the CAMFT Code of Ethics, establishing critical guardrails for AI. To ensure a comprehensive professional overview, this workshop cross-references evolving digital standards from the APA, NASW, ACA, and AAMFT codes. Beyond mere compliance, the course explores how these updates serve as a practical roadmap for maintaining human accountability in an automated world. Whether you are a frontline therapist or a clinical supervisor, this course provides actionable frameworks to safely guide therapists’ practice, documentation, and oversight.

Learning objectives: Participants in this workshop will be able to:

  1. Analyze the recent updates to Section 6 of the CAMFT Code of Ethics regarding telehealth, technology, and artificial intelligence, and cross-reference these standards with parallel digital evolutions in the APA, NASW, ACA, and AAMFT codes.

  2. Evaluate the ethical risks, benefits, and practical implications of incorporating AI tools (such as AI scribes, clinical documentation assistants, and chatbots) into daily practice, with a specific focus on maintaining human accountability, safeguarding client privacy, and mitigating algorithmic bias.

  3. Develop a practical framework for clinical implementation and supervisory oversight to ensure both therapists and supervisees can responsibly navigate, document, and monitor the use of emerging technologies while upholding strict standards of informed consent and professional boundaries.
